Mayor Menino, Camp Harbor View Foundation Announce First Annual Harborthon 5K

Camp Harbor View to host 500 runners on Long Island for road race event

Mayor Thomas M. Menino today joined Jack Connors, Jr. to announce the First Annual Camp Harbor View Harborthon 5K, a fundraising event to benefit summer programming at Camp Harbor View. Registration is now open for the Harborthon 5K, which will take place on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 6:30pm on Long Island in the Boston Harbor. The Harborthon is a 5 kilometer (3.1 miles) road race event including a post-race barbecue celebration and ferry transportation to and from Long Island. All proceeds from the Harborthon will benefit Camp Harbor View.

Participants may register at their convenience at www.campharborview5k.com and can also email info@camphaborviewfoundation.com or call (617) 369 – 0070 to request an application.

“The road race is a terrific way to help provide a young person in the City of Boston with positive and enriching opportunities this summer,” Mayor Menino said. “It’s also a perfect chance for runners to explore the treasures of Long Island and the great facilities that Camp Harbor View offers.”

The Harborthon 5K will be a USATF New England certified race course, beginning and ending at the Camp Harbor View campus. It will take runners on a tour of beautiful views and historical landmarks around Long Island, one of the lesser explored Boston Harbor Islands. After the race, gift items will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place runners of each age group. Runners are invited to attend the post-race barbecue celebration beginning at 7:00pm with entertainment from DJ Renell and food and refreshments courtesy of Kayem Foods, Harpoon Brewery, and, Pit Stop Barbecue.

Water transportation will be provided by Boston’s Best Cruises with ferries leaving from Boston’s Long Wharf at 5:15pm and Marina Bay in Quincy at 5:30pm. Returning ferries are offered at departure times from Camp Harbor View of 7:45pm, 8:30pm, and 9:30pm.

The registration fee of $40 includes transportation, race entry fee, barbecue admission and refreshments, and one Harborthon t-shirt.

Camp Harbor View is working in conjunction with David McGillivray and DMSE Sports, Inc on the production of the Harborthon. DMSE Sports, Inc has produced or consulted on more than 800 events worldwide, including the BAA Boston Marathon.

Camp Harbor View opened in 2007 as a result of Mayor Menino’s concern for the welfare of Boston’s inner-city children. Mayor Menino reached out to Boston businessman and civic leader Jack Connors, Jr. and together they had the idea to create a camp for the most at-risk children of Boston that would expose them to experiences and activities beyond their day to day life. With the help of John Fish and a powerful Suffolk Construction team, the Camp was built in 109 days. Today, Camp Harbor View is operated with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston and provides over 600 of Boston’s inner-city youth with four weeks of summer day camp for just $5. Each camper experiences a wide variety of activities designed to build confidence, encourage creativity, and help develop the leadership skills they need during school and beyond.
